And here we are again, 2020, assessing yet another issue that is in the forefront of all minds everywhere, all over the world … Covid-19.
Returning to Work
As we prepare for the country and the world to Return to Work, it only makes sense that we should proactively view Covid-19 training as mandatory compliance, acknowledge best practices, and turn the threat into a Leading Indicator. That might be stretching it a bit, but given the sacrifices already endured, we CERTAINLY don’t want to find ourselves playing “catch up” on this.
Leading Indicators help us identify and understand the factors affecting the risk of injury. Treating the current Coronavirus pandemic with proactive, preventive and predictive measures will provide information about the effective performance of your employees’ safety and health activities.
A Proactive Safety Climate
Safety Climate refers to employee perceptions about safety at a point in time. At THIS point in time, there is nothing more important than preventing and hopefully eliminating the spread of this disease.
The time is now for proactive measures that will PREVENT illness, REDUCE costs associated with it, IMPROVE productivity and performance, OPTIMIZE safety and health, and RAISE worker participation in the awareness efforts. This will require engagement from the bottom up, and it will need to start with training, information and communication from the top down.
Safety Culture should be centered around identifying ways to prevent work injury and illness from occurring. This new threat should be treated the same way, with mandated Safety and Compliance training. Protecting and educating your employees is definitely paramount as we move forward, and this can be accomplished while they are at home, online, before their Back to Work dates are given.
New courses are available now that will give your employees very specific knowledge of the expectations for their Return to Work. These courses include Coronavirus Preparedness, Crisis Management and Emergency Response Planning, Working Remotely, and Handling Stress.
Staying Compliant
Human Resource departments have been hit especially hard, tasked with maintaining calm in the chaos of the daily changes and challenges of Federal rules and regulations. Health and safety legislation and regulations are being updated every day. It’s a lot to keep up with. Getting your employees back to work, and your company back on the road to prosperity will require good information and communication.
